Chronic Pain Treatment

Prolozone Therapy

Chronic Pain is epidemic today. This chronic pain is almost always in our ligaments, tendons, and soft tissue, which have low oxygen tension and poor circulation. These are two double whammies. They lead to local tissue acidosis, and this is what creates pain. Pain is or can be debilitating. Pain often impairs our immune and hormonal function. Everything in our bodies is interrelated.

 What causes chronic pain?

The common underlying causes of chronic pain are poor circulation in the area of the pain. This leads to local tissue lactic acidosis, which causes the pain we often experience. This becomes a vicious cycle, from poor circulation to lactic acidosis to pain. Lactic acidosis is what a runner experiences as pain in his or her calves after a good run.

A traumatic injury can produce a localized edema or swelling, and inflammation. This leads to poor circulation in the area of the physical trauma, and then poor circulation and pain.

Ozone can cure chronic pain

The cure comes through breaking this vicious cycle, by using interventions that improve local circulation, thereby decreasing acidosis and inflammation, and also eradicating local chronic infections, which are epidemic today. One intervention involves the use of local procaine (Novocain) and medical grade ozone injections, known as Prolozone Therapy.

Prolozone combines procaine, a small amount of homeopathic and anti-inflammatory medicine and a form of Vitamin B12, as well as other minerals that are critical for healing.

This is then followed by medical grade ozone that is also injected locally. These injections help cells in the area of the pain function better, produce less lactic acid, and improve circulation in local tissues. These two -- procaine and ozone -- combine to produce lower tissue acidosis, thereby decreasing pain. Ozone by itself stimulates better circulation.

Procaine supports what is called healthy membrane potential on the surface of every cell in our bodies. It depolarizes the cell membranes of our cells so that toxins can be released from our cells and essential nutrients can get into the cells. Procaine is the same as Novocain. It breaks down after an injection into all natural substances.

Ozone dilates our blood vessels, supports healthy immune function, and enhances oxygenation of the particular tissue into which ozone is injected. It is always preceded in therapy by a procaine injection, in part because of the beneficial actions of procaine, and in part because ozone by itself can be painful, and procaine is an anesthetic that helps prevent pain. Ozone also kills microorganisms that are behind chronic inflammation and infections.

Ozone generates the formation of what are called ozonides, or peroxides. The body uses these peroxides to stimulate repair and increase healthy growth factors in the joints or areas of local injection.

The reason that some injuries completely heal and others do not has to do with circulation. In order for a damaged area of the body to regenerate and heal, it must have the critical elements that only the blood can provide: vitamins, minerals, and oxygen.

Of these, by far the most important is oxygen. Low levels of oxygen cause an accumulation of lactic acid, which is what causes pain.

Prolozone therapy works in three ways

Prolozone works in three ways. First, homeopathic anti-inflammatory medications are injected into the injured area to reduce inflammation and swelling. This leads to increased circulation. Next, the area is treated with vitamins and minerals that are critical for healing.

And finally, the area is infiltrated with oxygen in the form of ozone. The result is that the tissues get what they need to heal. And as they heal, the circulation to the area is re-established, and the treatment is complete. The response to treatment varies from person to person, but most people only need from 3-5 treatments.

I use Prolozone therapy injections to offset the vicious cycle of local tissue acidosis leading to more free radicals, and more local inflammation and/or chronic localized infections. Indeed, osteoarthritis and low back pain may be due to chronic infections.

The wonderful thing about Prolozone injections, in addition to relieving pain and killing chronic infectious microorganisms, is that even when the injection is near the area of pain, it still works well to alleviate that pain. Ozone is a gas, and when this gas is injected, it will expand and travel across what are called fascia planes and go to where it is needed.

Can it really be this simple?

The injections require training to administer. Dr. Zieve, with his background in emergency medicine, has taken this and other training several times, is certified in this method, and has administered these injections to many patients over the past 10 years.

It is easy in that all it often requires is local injections of procaine and ozone into areas of pain.

What can I expect with Prolozone injections?

Patients not uncommonly experience a decrease in pain, and often a true cure of many chronic injuries and degenerative processes

Conditions that respond to Prolozone injections include anything associated with pain:

  •  Chronic back and neck pain
  •  Rotator cuff injuries
  •  Degenerative and arthritic knees and hips
  •  Degenerated discs
  •  Sciatica
  •  Sinus infections, acute and chronic
  •  Dental infections and pain
  •  Scar issues
  •  Pelvic disorders in women

Prolozone works on just about any pain problem you might have, including:

neck pain, whiplash, degenerated or herniated discs, low back pain, plantar fascitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, torn tendons, TMJ syndrome, sciatica, heel spurs, neuromas, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tears, knee injuries, and virtually any other sports injury.

Because Prolozone treatments also result in cartilage regeneration, the technique is also remarkably effective even for severe cases of osteoarthritis of the hip or knee. The good thing about Prolozone is that it is not just a treatment for pain. The results actually represent a permanent fix

The value of Prolozone injections is that they relieve pain and also correct the underlying pathology that led to pain. About 75% of chronic pain sufferers who undergo this therapy become permanently pain free.

Is Prolozone the same as Prolotherapy?

No. Prolozone uses oxygen to create a healing. Prolotherapy uses inflammation to create the healing. Prolotherapy has the following limitations. Prolotherapy is extremely painful. Pain usually persists for days to weeks after a treatment. Patients receiving Prolozone feel immediate improvement, with very little to any pain at all during the treatments. Next, prolotherapy requires many injections, whereas Prolozone only requires a few. This means that Prolozone is faster and much less expensive. Prolozone therapy is especially effective in regenerating the cartilage in damaged knees and hips. Prolotherapy is usually not able to do this.

How often would I need these injections?

After your first injection (s) it is best to return in 2 weeks to evaluate your pain, and decide if you need another injection. The second visit is generally two weeks after the initial visit for injection(s). It is important to leave 2 weeks between injections for the therapy to work deeply into the tissue. The third visit, if needed, is 2 weeks after the second visit injection. The fourth visit is 4-6 weeks later. People with chronic pain may require” booster” injections every 3-4 months.

What do I do after my Prolozone injection?  Ice may be used in the injected area if you experience any discomfort for 15 minutes at least 2-3 times in the first 48 hours after your injection. Most people, in the first 48 hours after the first injection, experience some level of stability, with a 20-80% reduction of pain in a joint or area of injury. Over the first week after your injection, some of the pain may return. The idea is that by the time of your second visit, the level of will be less.

Does chronic pain treatment at Partners in Healthcare Naturally involve drug prescriptions?

No. Our treatments, because they address the underlying causes of chronic pain while at the same time relieve symptoms, enable people to stop taking chronic pain medicines that they may have received from other physicians.

A treatment course for chronic pain may involve suggesting other integrative and naturopathic treatment approaches, such as acupuncture, botanicals, or other nutrients. Chiropractic may also support Prolozone therapy.

Tip of the Week

Home-made Air Sanitizer

Replace your artificial home air fresheners with a home-made air sanitizer by combining a few drops of  thieves essential oil with water.  This can be sprayed in the air or directly on surfaces to reduce the concentration of pathogenic microbes.
